3 Planes

A sculptural and tactile extension, part of the redevelopment of a terraced house in east London, is given physical consistency though the predominate use of in-situ concrete.

The ground floor refurbishment (phase one in the redevelopment of this terraced home) includes a ground floor rear and side extension, carefully designed to take into account light and shade, human proportions, views, privacy, existing context and the restrictions of local planning policy. The arrangement of the internal living space was redesigned to create an open and clean architectural canvas. Load bearing walls were demolished within the main body of the property. The structure was then reinforced with support through the addition of reinforced concrete steel beams. This not only supported the brief of creating an open layout but added to the distinct “raw” concept.

“the project is a study in concrete, making the most of tactile, sculptural surfaces that envelope all the new spaces”

The conservatory that was situated on the site previously - despite being dilapidated - benefited from generous internal volume. We wanted to retain the volume, whilst respecting the stipulations of the planning department to retain the boundary wall to the neigh- bours at 2 metres. The design became a manipulation of angles and planes to work with the existing context, but create something that was unashamedly idiosyncratic, whilst fitting seamlessly into it’s surroundings.

The resulting architectural geometry is deceivingly simple and unfussy. Three wall planes are folded across the rear facade angled obliquely to focus views and three roof planes were utilised as minimum number required to respond to the context. Together, the three planes (roof and facade) are an expression of geometry, space and solidity. The extension is free of downpipes, gutters, light fittings and even door handles externally.

Entering the terraced property is unusual, in that the whole ground floor is open as one large space. Internally the space is full of natural light, volume and texture. The materials were selected for the integrity, honesty and longevity. Concrete, black metal and fair-faced block-work make up a restrained palette, contributing to the creation of a calming atmosphere.
